No Local Court for St. George Divorce Cases

St. George incorporated as a municipality in 2019, making it one of Louisiana's newer cities. However, incorporation does not automatically create a divorce court. The city has a Mayor's Court at 13421 Hooper Road, Suite 9, in Central -- but that court handles only municipal ordinance violations and traffic matters. It has no jurisdiction over divorce.

All divorce filings for St. George residents go to the East Baton Rouge Parish Family Court, which has exclusive jurisdiction over domestic matters in the parish. As the Family Court's own statement makes clear: "The Family Court has exclusive jurisdiction over domestic matters including divorce, child custody, support, community property, and protective orders."

Records are held by the EBR Clerk of Court. The Clerk notes that parish records go back centuries: "Parish Clerk has marriage records from 1840, divorce, probate, court and land records from 1782." St. George residents' divorce records will be part of this EBR parish archive.

How St. George Residents Get Divorce Records

To get a certified copy of a divorce judgment from an EBR Parish case, contact the EBR Clerk of Court's Public Service Department at (225) 389-3950. You can request copies in person at the main office on St. Louis Street or at the Airline Highway branch. Mail requests are accepted.

Provide the full names of both parties and the approximate year of the divorce. The Clerk will search the index, pull the case number, and prepare certified copies. Fees vary based on document length and certification requirements -- call ahead to confirm current costs.

Older case records may be in the Clerk's Archives Department, reachable at (225) 389-3988. Records from even older cases -- some going back to the City Hall era -- may be stored at (225) 389-7837. If your records are not in the main system, ask about these archival sources.

Online Access to Divorce Records

The EBR Clerk offers online access through Clerk Connect, a subscription-based system. Pricing is $20 for 24-hour access, $65 for 30 days, or $780 per year. This service lets you search case records, view filings, and in some cases access document images remotely.

A statewide option is also available through eClerks LA at eclerksla.com. This platform aggregates records from multiple Louisiana parishes. It is useful if you are not certain which parish holds the records you need or if you need to search across parishes.

In-person computer terminals at the Clerk's office are available at no charge during business hours. These are a good option for one-time searches without a subscription.

The statewide eClerks LA portal provides access to records from parishes across Louisiana, including East Baton Rouge. The screenshot below, from eclerksla.com, shows the portal interface for statewide divorce record searches.

Filing for Divorce as a St. George Resident

St. George is within East Baton Rouge Parish. Domicile in St. George satisfies the parish domicile requirement under Louisiana Civil Code Article 3941. You file your divorce petition at the EBR Family Court, not at any St. George city office.

Louisiana Civil Code Article 102 allows you to file before completing the required separation. After filing and service of the petition, you wait 180 days if there are no minor children, or 365 days if minor children are involved. Under Article 103, if you have already been separated for the required period, the court can grant the divorce immediately without a further wait.

Louisiana is a community property state under Civil Code Article 2325. Marital property is generally divided equally. Disputes over community property can extend a case significantly, so uncontested divorces where both parties agree on division are generally faster and less costly.

Self-represented parties can use the Family Court Self-Help Center at 300 North Boulevard, 4th Floor -- the same building as the Family Court. The center can help with forms and procedures, though it does not provide legal advice.

Public Records Access

Under La. R.S. 44:1, Louisiana's Public Records Law, finalized divorce records are open to the public. Case files, petitions, and judgments can be reviewed and copied. Some records involving minor children may have limited access. Ask the Clerk when requesting documents if any restrictions apply to the specific case you need.
